Trade Secrets: Remove Epoxy From Your Clothes?
Have You Ever Spilled Epoxy ?
Need to remove epoxy from fabrics? We’ve all been there. You’re dressed to impress, ready to leave the house, and you decide to take a quick peek at your ongoing project in the workshop. And then, disaster strikes – a drop of epoxy lands on your favourite outfit.
Why is Cleanliness Important When Working with Epoxy?
Being sloppy isn’t an option. I’ve learned the importance of cleanliness not just for the sake of the end product and preserving my attire, but also for safety. If you’re smeared with epoxy, it’s not just untidy, it’s hazardous. It’s essential to wear protective gloves when handling epoxy, and for tasks that could get messy, consider donning a plastic apron and shoe covers.
What if You Spill Epoxy?
However, this piece is for those who find themselves with epoxy on their clothing or accidentally spill it in their vehicle. There are three main types of epoxy spills, each requiring a unique clean up strategy.
How to Clean Pure Resin?
Resin should be cleaned using a potent solvent, such as one based on MIBK (methyl isobutyl ketone). Acetone or lacquer thinner can also be used, but they are highly flammable. Never apply solvent directly to your skin. Remove the stained clothing before treating the resin spot with solvent. Wipe the spot thoroughly with a paper towel dampened with solvent, then wash with hot, soapy water. Be aware, solvents can permanently alter the colour of some fabrics and dissolve others.
What’s the Best Way to Remove Epoxy Hardener?
The hardener component of epoxy is more dangerous but easier to remove. Hardener on its own is best cleaned off with hot, soapy water. Solvents are ineffective on these spots. When removing hardener, it’s important to avoid skin contact. Using a solvent, even something as mild as vinegar, to remove hardener can actually drive it into your skin. Stick to soap and water.
What to Do if You Spill Mixed Resin and Hardener?
If you let mixed epoxy cure, it will. The spot will eventually crack, leaving a hole in your pants. If you get mixed epoxy on fabric, act immediately. First, place a piece of plywood behind the stained area, apply a dab of waterless skin cleanser to the spot, and scrape with a coin. Repeat this process four or five times. Then scrub with dish soap and a stiff fingernail brush. If there’s still epoxy in the fabric, it will usually appear as a white spot. Repeat this process until the spot disappears, then rinse thoroughly.
