Projects: Why Choose Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy for a Career Change?

Why Choose Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy for a Career Change?

Nigel Chapman, a former engineer in the gas industry, found a fresh start in boat-building. After dedicating nearly 30 years to engineering, he decided it was time for a change. This led him to the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy, where he is currently crafting a 12’ Fleet Trow using glued clinker construction.

What Role Does the Training Program Play in Your Journey?

The project is part of the academy’s training program, serving as a crucial step in Nigel’s journey to becoming a boat builder.

Which WEST SYSTEM® Products Did You Use and How Did They Help?

He utilised WEST SYSTEM 105 Epoxy Resin® and 205 Fast Hardener®, finding them extremely beneficial. The products were not only clean to use during the building process but also provided lasting strength to the finished boat.

What Was the Most Rewarding Part of the Project at the Boat Building Academy?

One of the most rewarding aspects of the project for Nigel was witnessing the boat take shape right before his eyes. Despite the process being slow, he found it incredibly satisfying to watch.

What’s Your Top Tip for Aspiring Boatbuilders?

For those considering a similar project, Nigel’s top tip is to stay organised. Planning ahead for the materials needed and adhering to a schedule are key. Leaving things to the last minute could result in not having enough time to source the necessary materials.

What’s Next for Nigel Chapman?

Having completed his first build, Nigel is well on his way to establishing himself as a boat-builder. We wish him the best of luck in this exciting new chapter of his career!
