Projects: How Stuart McGowan Changed His Career Path with WEST SYSTEM® Epoxy?
Stuart McGowan, despite his ties to the industry, only recently decided to leave his engineering job to pursue boat building. His enrolment in the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy marks the start of this new career path.
Who is Stuart McGowan?
Stuart is a chartered mechanical engineer with years of experience in the water industry. However, he felt the need for a career change and decided to join the 38-week Boat Building Course at the Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis.
What Led to the Boat Building Project?
The boat building project was initiated as part of the academy’s course. Building a boat is a crucial step towards becoming a boat builder.
How Did WEST SYSTEM®/PRO-SET® Epoxy Products Assist in the Build?
I used two different fillers from the WEST SYSTEM product range in the build of my boat – WEST SYSTEM Epoxy plus 406 Colloidal Silica for general assembly, and 409 Microsphere Blend for filleting and fairing. Both filled mixes have been of great assistance to me during the build.
What Was the Most Rewarding Part of the Project?
The process of seeing the boat come together into a build I could be proud of was extremely rewarding – and I was happy to see the finished project.
What’s Your Top Tip for BoatBuilders?
My one tip is to always add more filler to WEST SYSTEM Epoxy to make it thicker than you think you need it be – or you won’t get the results expected.
Stuart’s decision to embark on a 38-week Boat Building Course at the renowned Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis has equipped him with the essential skills to become a proficient boat builder. We remain hopeful and excited for his continued enjoyment in this newly chosen career path.
