WEST SYSTEM: What Sets ‘SeaFinish Creations’ Apart in The Marine Industry?
‘SeaFinish Creations’ is a company that specialises in all aspects of marine finishes, if you hadn’t already guessed from the name.
At the heart of this brand is Jacob. A man whose life took a transformative turn at the age of 15 when he relocated to the south of France with his father. The initial challenge of adapting to a new school environment was difficult. However, this soon gave way to an opportune entry into the yachting industry. This is where Jacob was able to start learning transferable skills in painting, varnishing, and woodworking.
Accumulating Expertise
As the years advanced, Jacob expanded his skill set and accumulated a ton of experience. This contributed to well-regarded boatyards and serving on high profile yachts throughout Germany, Netherlands, Spain, UK, and France.
Jacob recently wrapped up an extensive restoration of a 1938 Sparkman & Stevens Yawl in Germany and The Netherlands, lasting a total of seven years. This major project was accompanied by pits stops at Spirit Yachts and Monaco Marine.
Additionally, he actively contributed to his professional portfolio by engaging with several 12-metre racing yachts.
Materials and Techniques
As a painter and varnisher, he utilises a wide range of products. Some of which include WEST SYSTEM® Epoxy, 3M’s products, Awlgrip Paints and Epifanes Yacht Varnishes.
Due to his line of work Jacob is able to employ epoxy in a multitude of ways. Typically, injecting it or using it as a coating to seal substrates smoothly. This particular method would involve the 207 Special Clear Hardener®.
Overcoming Challenges
Facing obstacles is part of his daily routine, particularly when managing simultaneous tasks within a project. He believes that you must maintain high standards when it comes to finishing work because you’re initially faced with a host of problems. “The goal is to reduce these problems as much as possible. This is done by ensuring that every aspect of the project’s cleanliness and organisation is carefully controlled, right down to the smallest detail.”
Looking ahead to his forthcoming projects, Jacob plans to restore the cabin sides and cockpit of a vintage sailing yacht, and he will also refurbish the floorboards of a contemporary, expansive sailing yacht.
When we sought Jacob’s insight, and he offered a candid piece of advice: “Get someone else to do it!”
