Projects: The stylish and sleek, handcrafted, wooden sink
In February 2017 we featured a beautiful wooden bath tub built by the multi-talented Marco Casavecchia – an architect, boat builder and cabinet maker based in Susa, Italy. We caught up with Marco again this month to hear all about his latest project, a stunning and unusual wooden sink built for one of his customers.
How did the project come about?
I was asked by one of my customers to make a sink as part of furnishing a small space behind her office which she could use to freshen up in between meetings – she liked the idea of using wood so that’s what we went for.
Years ago, I was lucky enough to find a piece of cherry wood which had a really interesting natural double curve. The bowl of the sink came from this.
I cut curved strips that followed the grain of the wood and glued them together to make the shape of the bowl. Then it was just a simple matter of gluing the flat parts to the sides of the sink.
It was really quite a straightforward job.
Which WEST SYSTEM® or PRO-SET® epoxy products did you use? How did they help?
I used WEST SYSTEM 105 Epoxy Resin® and WEST SYSTEM 209 Extra Slow Hardener™ for gluing the separate pieces of wood together. I then used WEST SYSTEM 207 Special Coating Hardener™ for coating as well as a high gloss two-pack polyurethane varnish on top to give it that extra shiny finish.
What was the most rewarding part of the project?
Seeing the beauty and the clarity of the grain after I applied the first coat of WEST SYSTEM 105 Resin/207 Special Coating Hardener™ was a really great moment. I could see straight away how it enhanced the look of the wood which was fantastic.
What’s your top tip for people looking to start a similar project?
Just like with my wooden bath tub, I’d recommend using well-seasoned, dry, stable wood, free of blemishes or defects… and of course, WEST SYSTEM products!
Thanks to Marco for telling us about his project. Have you got a project to share? Contact us and you may feature in a future edition of epoxycraft!
