Projects: Using epoxy to build the perfect boat — by Sam Collins

Sam Collins has been working hard to achieve his vision of ‘Karen,’ the perfect boat. Currently under construction, Sam is building an 18’ Alden Sloop, which is strip planked in western red cedar. When completed, she will have cold-moulded khaya outer veneers. We took a look at how the project is going so far.

Firstly, tell us a little about yourself.

I’m 22, and am currently a student of The Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis. I’m undertaking an intensive course which will equip me with a wide range of practical skills in boat-building and repair.

How did the project come about?
The project came about by the urge to build a boat, followed by the unmissable opportunity to do so here at the Academy.

Which WEST SYSTEM or PRO-SET epoxy products did you use? How did they help?

I used a lot of WEST SYSTEM 105 Epoxy Resin®, which was incredibly useful. It’s such a versatile substance, which is also very strong – a product definitely necessary in any boat-building venture.

What was the most rewarding part of the project?

I’m currently waiting for what I believe will be the most rewarding part of the project: finishing the deck of ‘Karen’.

What’s your top tip for boat builders looking to start a similar project?
Plan ahead as much as possible and ensure that you know what you are doing and when; it will save you a lot of time in the long run. Preparation is also key. Make sure you have all the right products ready and available for you to use as this too will save time.
