Trade Secrets: TRADE SECRET: Achieve a well-varnished wood trim in half the time with epoxy resin
Everyone likes the appeal of a well-varnished wood trim on boats. But these days world, waiting two weeks for the twelve layers of varnish to dry just isn’t feasible. In the UK, that’s pretty much the whole summer!
But, never fear there’s a way you can still spend your summer out on the water in style rather than stuck in the boatyard with a pot of varnish. You can achieve the same well-varnished look in far less time using coats of WEST SYSTEM® epoxy resin.
Three coats of epoxy resin can be applied in the same day to build up layers quickly. Then, after the third coat, allow 24 hours for the curing process to finish and apply three coats of varnish. Et voilà! In under a week you’ve achieved that impressive wood trim.
Not only that, but by using epoxy and varnish together you get an even longer-lasting finish that looks great and can withstand the harshest conditions. Epoxy resin brings the moisture barrier and varnish brings the UV filter.
So go on, make the well-varnished wood on your boat the envy of the marina – no-one needs to know that you didn’t give up your summer to achieve it!
There’s plenty more advice on final finish coatings over at West System International.
