Projects: It’s never too late to change career – a fresh start with WEST SYSTEM epoxy
For Nigel Chapman, getting into boat-building was an opportunity for a fresh start in his career. We caught up with him to find out how he’s found the experience of working on a build from scratch for the very first time.
Firstly, tell us a little about yourself.
I have been working for almost 30 years as an engineer in the Gas industry. After spending so long in the same industry, I decided I wanted a change. I joined Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy, where I’m currently building a 12’ Fleet Trow of glued clinker construction.
How did the project come about?
The build is part of the training programme at the academy – so it is a necessary part of my training as a boat builder.
Which WEST SYSTEM or PRO-SET epoxy products did you use? How did they help?
I used WEST SYSTEM 105 Epoxy Resin and 205 Hardener which was extremely useful. I found it clean to use during the building process, and it has remained very strong afterwards.
What was the most rewarding part of the project?
I found watching the boat develop in front of me was very rewarding – it was a slow process, but satisfying to watch.
What’s your top tip for boatbuilders looking to start a similar project?
You need to keep to a schedule. Plan what materials you’ll need well in advance, rather than leave it to the last minute and not have enough time to get hold of them. Organising yourself is the most important thing.
